In the past, counterfeiters mainly targeted products from popular anime series. Today, the phenomenon has expanded significantly and now affects major movie, comic book, and gaming franchises as well.
If you have doubts about the authenticity of a product you are considering purchasing, the following guidelines can help you distinguish a genuine licensed collectible from a counterfeit.
Price
Price is often the first warning sign.
Counterfeit products are acquired by sellers at a fraction of the cost of genuine licensed items and are therefore typically sold well below normal market prices. If a deal appears too good to be true, it probably is.
Do not hesitate to ask the seller directly whether the item is authentic. Sellers offering counterfeit products often avoid mentioning the original manufacturer's name, making it more difficult to establish legal responsibility.
Keep in mind that the retail price of an official figure or statue reflects many factors, including:
- Licensing fees
- Manufacturing costs
- Quality control
- Packaging
- Distribution and logistics
There are no miracles in the collectibles industry. If a figure that normally sells for €49 in Europe is being offered for $9 from an unknown source, there is a strong possibility that it is a counterfeit.
Importer and Distributor Labels
One of the most reliable ways to identify an official product is by checking for the presence of an importer or distributor label.
Official products distributed in Europe often include a sticker displaying:
- The name of the authorized distributor
- The distributor's logo
- Regulatory information
- Product identification details
Exceptions may exist when a retailer imports products directly from the manufacturer or through an authorized Asian distributor. In such cases, the absence of a European distributor sticker does not automatically indicate a counterfeit product.
Packaging Quality
If the previous indicators are unavailable, carefully examine the packaging.
Official manufacturers generally invest considerable effort into packaging design and print quality. Warning signs include:
- Packaging that scratches easily
- Poor print quality or visible moiré patterns
- Blurry images or poorly defined printed areas
- Low-quality graphic design
- Product photos whose colors differ significantly from the actual figure
- Thin, flimsy, or poor-quality cardboard
If a seller states that a figure is being sold without its original packaging and only includes the loose figure, extreme caution is advised. Genuine collectible products are normally sold with their original packaging unless clearly identified as second-hand items.
Product Quality
The quality of counterfeit products is typically far below that of official licensed collectibles.
Since counterfeit manufacturers focus primarily on minimizing production costs, common issues include:
- Inferior paint applications
- Visible paint defects
- Poor sculpting quality
- Soft or distorted details
- Misaligned parts
- Inferior materials
- Fragile construction
Official collectibles are designed to meet the expectations of collectors and generally undergo quality control procedures before reaching the market. Counterfeit products rarely receive the same level of attention, resulting in noticeable differences in appearance, durability, and overall finish.
When in Doubt
If you are uncertain about a product's authenticity, purchase only from authorized retailers, official distributors, or trusted specialty stores with an established reputation within the collecting community.
A low price may be tempting, but genuine collectibles offer superior quality, official licensing, greater long-term value, and the assurance that you are supporting the creators, manufacturers, and rights holders behind the products you enjoy.
