Receiving a new statue is always a special moment for any collector. After weeks—or sometimes even months—of anticipation, the urge to unbox your piece immediately is completely understandable. However, taking a few simple precautions can help prevent damage and ensure your statue is handled safely.
Before Opening: Let Your Package Acclimate
During transit, your statue may be exposed to significant temperature fluctuations. In winter, packages can spend several hours in warehouses or delivery vehicles exposed to very low temperatures. Conversely, during summer, they may be subjected to high heat.
The resin used in collectible statues is a durable material, but its mechanical properties can vary depending on temperature. When cold, resin becomes more rigid and brittle. Handling a statue immediately after delivery may therefore increase the risk of breakage, especially on delicate components such as fingers, weapons, hair strands, or other fine details.
For this reason, it is highly recommended to leave the package unopened in its destination room for several hours before unboxing it. An acclimation period of 12 to 24 hours is ideal, particularly during winter months or whenever the package has been exposed to extreme temperatures.
Unboxing: Take Your Time
Once the package has reached room temperature, prepare a clean, stable, and spacious surface for unboxing.
When opening the package:
- Carefully remove the outer packaging materials.
- Keep the original packaging, especially the protective foam inserts.
- Remove each component individually and without forcing it.
- Avoid lifting the statue by thin or protruding parts.
Resin statues are generally protected by custom-cut foam packaging. If a piece seems difficult to remove, never pull it abruptly. Take the time to determine the safest way to extract it to avoid placing unnecessary stress on the sculpture.
Why Is Acclimation Important?
When resin is cold, it becomes less resistant to impacts and mechanical stress. A part that would normally withstand slight flexing or routine handling without issue may become significantly more fragile after exposure to very low temperatures.
Allowing the statue to gradually reach room temperature enables the material to regain its optimal mechanical properties before handling or assembly. This simple precaution can significantly reduce the risk of accidental breakage during the unboxing process.
Assembling Your Statue
Before assembly:
- Verify that all parts are present.
- Review any instructions provided with the statue.
- Handle each component with care.
- Never use excessive force when fitting parts together.
Most modern statues use magnets or alignment rods to facilitate assembly. If a component does not seem to fit properly, double-check its orientation before attempting to force it into place.
After Installation
Once your statue is fully assembled:
- Place it on a stable surface capable of supporting its weight.
- Avoid direct exposure to sunlight.
- Keep it away from radiators, fireplaces, or other heat sources.
- Maintain a stable room temperature and humidity level whenever possible.
Following these recommendations will help preserve your statue's paintwork, finish quality, and structural integrity for years to come.
A Little Patience Goes a Long Way
Waiting a few hours before opening your package can be difficult when you've been eagerly anticipating a new addition to your collection. However, allowing the statue to acclimate is one of the most effective ways to prevent temperature-related handling damage.
A little patience can often prevent irreversible breakage and ensure that your statue is handled under the best possible conditions from the moment it arrives.
