Introduction to Counterfeit Collectibles

Modified on Tue, 2 Jun at 3:56 PM

Counterfeit collectibles are generally produced using the following method: counterfeiters obtain an original figure, create a mold from it, and then use that mold to manufacture unauthorized copies. This process inevitably results in a loss of detail and quality compared to the genuine product.

Some brands are more heavily affected by counterfeiting than others. These include, but are not limited to:

Good Smile Company and all publishers distributed by the company. Good Smile's own products, particularly the highly popular Nendoroid line, are among the most frequently counterfeited collectibles on the market.

Banpresto. The Japanese manufacturer, part of the Bandai group, is especially impacted due to the immense popularity of its Dragon Ball figures. Banpresto generally produces its figures in a single production run, creating a limited supply for the global market. Once these products sell out, prices often rise significantly on the secondary market, making them attractive targets for counterfeiters.

Bandai Tamashii Nations, particularly the S.H.Figuarts collection.

MegaHouse, another company within the Bandai group.

Funko, whose worldwide success has also attracted counterfeiters. When a Funko POP! figure is designated as "Vaulted" (meaning it is no longer being produced), or when it is a limited or exclusive release, demand and market prices can increase considerably. This is often when counterfeit versions begin to appear on major online marketplaces.

Counterfeit products represent a genuine risk for collectors. In addition to poor manufacturing quality, some collectible items are also intended for use as toys. Counterfeit versions rarely comply with the safety standards and regulations required by the European Union and other regulatory authorities, potentially posing health and safety concerns.
